Mel Andrews
“I’m a Southern California artist drawn to the industrial, Minimalist, LA Look of the 1950s and 60s. I am also drawn to pattern painting, and landscape painting.
I tend to rotate my focus between these three genres, finding that setting one aside for awhile provides some objective distance.
Since I’m not rebelling against Abstract Expressionism, I prefer to not remove the artist hand entirely. I’m fascinated by everyday items that have patterns such as packaging material, crates, dividers and patterned surfaces like diamond plate steel.
In creating the pattern paintings, I like to use different manufactured items like kitchen utensils, egg cartons, and candy boxes.
In creating the landscape paintings I like to focus on where the land, sea and sky come together, something that is a large influence on life here in Southern California.”
