Bits of Arty WisdomBefore I start painting I have a slightly ambiguous feeling: happiness is a special excitement because unhappiness is always possible a moment later.

M.Louise Stanley: Workshop: Sketchbook Visual Lab
Gouache and Watercolor: Sketchbook Visual Laboratory
M. Louise Stanley
Kala Institute, Berkeley, CA
Class #72: August 7-8: Saturday – Sunday 10am – 4pm
Tuition $192 Materials $45 Materials $45 Total Cost $237
Do they laugh when you pick up the brush? M. Louise Stanley will offer instruction in the use of gouache and watercolor and some helpful tips on generating ideas, collecting research, developing a visual laboratory of ideas for the day when the paper stares back at you in all its pristine nothingness!
We’ll experiment and compare the transparency of watercolor with the opacity of gouache and look at ways to incorporate both aspects on the same page. Chagall and Picasso did this. The velvety, chalky surface of gouache juxtaposed with transparent watercolor passages provides delicious painterly juxtapositions. Both mediums are portable for travel and studio use.
Enrollment limited to 10 students.
M. Louise Stanley holds a BFA from La Verne College, BFA and MFA from California College of Arts and Crafts. She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Fleishhacker Foundation, Gottlieb Foundation and has lectured, taught and exhibited nationally. She currently teaches at Berkeley City College and in her Emeryville Studio. Recent exhibitions were held at the San Jose Museum of Art and Katzen Arts Center, Washington DC. Public art installation ‘Neighborhood Convergence’ can be seen at the Powell Street Pedestrian Under-crossing at Interstate 80.
