Workshop: PhotoClub: More Than The Rule Of Thirds
Do your photographs all look the same? Is your subject always sitting in the center of the photograph? Are your backgrounds not working for you? Do you have to do too much work in photoshop to compensate for not so great original images? From the class introduction:
Many of you have probably heard about “The Rule of Thirds” in creating a photographic composition. I’ve been hearing about it a lot online, in other photo discussions. But if you haven’t heard of it, the Rule of Thirds is a way to use your camera as your cropping and composition tool, rather than wasting space and pixels by cropping later in photoshop. Although that being said, the rule can also be used later while editing images to salvage a less interesting image. With the Rule of Thirds the goal is to divide your field of vision into thirds, both vertically and horizontally. And place your subject within one-third of the viewfinder.
While many photography teachers swear by the Rule of Thirds, there are also other “rules” of dividing space that can be just as useful in creating great compositions.
This two day, beginning – intermediate level, (or a practice session for you more advanced togs) photography workshop will give you tips and techniques for creating more interesting compositions with your camera’s viewfinder by exploring more than The Rules of Thirds. We will also work on dividing our image fields in half and in quarters and learn when to not be afraid of centering the subject in the middle of the image.
Day 1: Will be a read through the topics and assignments and discussing those in the forums.
Day 2: Will be one week later and will have everyone posting their assignments to the forum gallery, and discussing our findings in the forum.
You can use any kind of camera – from point and shoot to SLR, digital or film, whatever format you are most comfortable with. It is meant to be a fun workshop that will get your eyes roaming and your brain working. It can also be used as a great way to get focused, get out of a composition rut, get inspired, or get working again if you’ve been lagging.
I will be facilitating this workshop online in The ArtStudio.
There are two sessions available:
Saturday Morning: January 23 & 30, 10:00am PST
Tuesday Evening: January 26 & February 2, 4:00pm PST
Fee: $45
