Rebecca Crowell: Old Walls and Lost Paths

My new work will be on view in a solo exhibition of abstract paintings in oil and wax at Darnell Fine Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico from October 1st through the 25th, 2009.

The paintings in the exhibition have been done in the year since my return from an artist residency that I participated in during the month of September, 2008 at the Centre D’Art I Natura in Catalonia, Spain.

From the exhibition statement:

Last fall I spent a month in Catalonia, Spain, which was the genesis for the work in this exhibit. I was an artist in residence at the Centre D’Art I Natura, located in a tiny, ancient stone village in the Pyrenees, and I was inspired by aspects of the environment that spoke of its long human habitation—the old walls of houses and churches, and the overgrown, eroded paths that appear and disappear in the mountains.

Later, when I came back home, I continued to work with abstracted ideas of walls and pathways, and for me they have evolved as metaphors for the passing of time and the challenges of life. …

Exhibition Dates: October 1 – October 25, 2009
Opening Reception: October 2, 2009 from 5 -7pm

Bits of Arty Wisdom

Abstract painting is abstract. It confronts you. There was a reviewer a while back who wrote that my pictures didn't have any beginning or any end. He didn't mean it as a compliment, but it was.
