ArtPrize
This looks like a very interesting ‘competition’.
At ArtPrize, any artist—from established to emerging—has the chance to show work. Any visitor can vote. The vote will determine who wins the largest art prize in the world. We also took the unusual step to allow people in the city to open a venue and choose the artists to show in their space. There is not one official curator or one jury for the competition.
The number of venues is fluid, therefore the number of artists competing is also fluid. The possibilities are wide open.
We can’t predict what will happen, but it should be a lot of fun finding out. — ArtPrize
The city of Grand Rapids will become an art gallery. ArtPrize art works and performances, professional and amateur, will be exhibited at hundreds of venues, all within a three-square mile area in Grand Rapids’ downtown riverfront district. The city has offered up parks and bridges for outdoor venue displays. Scores of businesses will convert lobbies and public space for displays.
Grand Rapids, a city of about 200,000 amidst a metropolis of more than a million people, has an impressive cultural urban core and a rich history of supporting public art. It is home to Alexander Calder’s “La Grand Vitesse,” the first community sculpture project funded through the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as major works by Mark di Suvero, Robert Morris and Maya Lin. — from the press release
I have a hard time with most online ‘popularity contests’. Mostly because if many of your friends aren’t online (like mine), your popularity just doesn’t show through. But this contest seems to be a little different.
First off, there is a $250,000 grand prize. And nine other prizes after that.
The people who vote on your work are the people who attend the exhibition – in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The number of artists who exhibit in the show are dictated by the number of venues that open up in Grand Rapids. The person who opens a venue in Grand Rapids is the person who picks the work to exhibit in that venue. Many curators, many voters.
Worth checking out. They are accepting work from around the world. Registration is open starting today and ends July 31, 2009.
